bushman (JAMaica)

Bushman played a key role in the roots reggae resurgence in Jamaica during the late 1990s. His rich, sincere baritone voice added a strong and authentic appeal to his songs. Born Dwight Marvin Duncan in Spring Garden St. Thomas on the East coast of Jamaica in 1973, he was actively involved in church choirs from the age of nine. During his teenage years, he became a selector for the Black Star Line sound system, going by the name Junior Melody (sometimes also billed as Junior Buckley).

Seeking to establish himself in the Jamaican music scene, Bushman commuted to Kingston, where he crossed paths with the renowned producers Steelie and Cleevie. Impressed by his warm baritone vocal range, they promptly recorded him, his first recording was „Grow Your Natty” at Studio 2000 and they christened him Bushman. The subsequent single, „Call the Hearse,” became a massive dancehall hit, paving the way for Bushman’s debut album, Nyah Man Chant, released in 1997. This album, widely considered his finest work, garnered critical acclaim due to its well-constructed sequence.

Bushman collaborated with producer King Jammy (Lloyd James) for his next two albums, Total Commitment (1999) and Higher Ground (2001). These were followed by Better Place in 2002 and My Meditation in 2003. His subsequent album, „Signs,” released in 2004, incorporated some R&B and pop elements, diversifying his musical style. In 2008, he released „Get It In Your Mind” in 2011, Bushman received widespread critical acclaim for his album „Bushman Sings the Bush Doctor” a tribute to Peter Tosh. Following this success, he released his newest album, „CONQUERING LION,” in 2018. Throughout his career, Bushman has collaborated on numerous single releases, including tracks like, ‘Its So Easy’ with Bobby Digital, ‘Truly Great’ with Morgan Heritage, ‘Hear Wah Me Ah Seh’ with Doncarleon, ‘Love Ya So Bad’ with Big Feet Records, ‘Evil Con Evil’ with LA Records.

The seven continents of the world have been graced by Bushman’s exceptional showmanship in live performances. From the Melbourne Caribbean Food Festival in Australia to the Rototom Reggae Festival in Spain, the Reggae Geel Festival in Belgium, the Roaring Thunder Concert in Lagos, the Rebel Salute Festival in Jamaica, and the Redemption Concert in Trinidad, to name just a few instances. Bushman has been honoured with two significant awards: the “Steppin Razor” award in 2019 and the prestigious “Peter Tosh Humanitarian” award in 2022. In recognition of his exceptional contributions to reggae music, he was also inducted into the Reggae Walk of Fame in 2022.

Bushman has consistently stayed true to cultural and conscious roots material, firmly rejecting the laid-back elements often found in contemporary Jamaican dancehall music. This unwavering commitment has resulted in greater recognition for him in, Africa, Europe and other parts of the world, compared to his level of fame in his homeland
